When Should You Hire a Handyman?
How to decide between doing a home repair yourself, calling a handyman, or hiring a licensed specialist, plus the warning signs that need a pro.
Plenty of home tasks are genuinely DIY-friendly. The question is whether the tools, the time, and the risk of getting it wrong are worth it for the job in front of you.
Good reasons to call
- • The job needs tools you would buy once and never use again
- • The finish matters, such as visible drywall or trim work
- • You are selling or listing and want a clean punch list
- • The list has grown long enough to eat a whole weekend
- • Ladder or height work you would rather not do
Signs it needs a licensed trade
Sparking outlets, gas smells, sewage backups, sagging floors, or active roof leaks are not handyman territory. Call the right specialist first.
The middle path
Many homeowners handle simple tasks themselves and save the fiddly, high-visibility, or awkward jobs for a scheduled handyman visit. That is usually the best value.
